Visitor Visa Subclass 600

The purpose of this visa is to allow people to travel to Australia for tourism or business purposes, or to visit family, on a temporary basis.

To be granted this visa, you must:

  • Genuinely intend to visit Australia for a holiday, to see family and/or friends, or for other purposes that are not related to work or medical treatment
  • Have access to sufficient funds to cover your costs whilst you are in Australia
  • Meet the relevant health and character criteria (this could include a requirement to obtain health insurance for the period of your stay in Australia)


What can you do: 


  • This is a temporary visa, which allows you to travel to Australia on a short-term basis. You will be granted either a singer entry visa or multiple entry visa for a period from 3 months at a time to a 12-month, depending on your circumstances.
  • ​This visa allows you to visit or for a business visa purpose
  • ​Study in Australia for up to 3 months


NOTE: You may be granted an extended visitor visa which could be valid for up to 5 years if you are the parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

If you are qualified for this visa, you are able to:

  • stay in Australia for up to 12 consecutive months per visit (you must spend no more than 12 months in Australia in any given 18-month period);
  • you must have health insurance covering the entire period of your stay in Australia; and
  • you will not be permitted to apply for another visa whilst in Australia.


The following conditions may be applied to Visitor visas, and you are not allowed to: 

  • Work or provide services to any business/organisation in Australia, or sell goods or services to the public whilst in Australia (unpaid genuine volunteer work may be permitted)
  • Study for more than three months in Australia
  • Condition 8503: No further stay

Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT)

If you have a visa refused or cancelled by the Department, you may be eligible to lodge a review application at the AAT. The Merits Review normally involve a hearing process. The AAT panel reviews the case based on the facts, law and policy of the original decision and make a decision. Generally, applicants will be granted a bridging visa while waiting for the hearing, and this can take up to 18 months depending on the visa. 

Visa status: A bridging visa remains valid while you wait for your hearing at the AAT. Work rights can be requested if you provide a compelling reason to work. 

AAT processing time: 12-18 months. The actual process times may vary, and this is case by case.

AAT costs: AAT application fee: A$1,731 (50% refund if you receive a favourable decision)

Rights to review at the AAT:

  • If a visa application lodged in Australia has been refused;
  • The cancellation happens while the visa holder is in Australia;
  • Onshore applicants must be physically present in Australia;
  • For offshore decisions, only sponsors or nominators in Australia or Australian relatives have the right to lodge the review application. The applicant for review must be a relative. 


The member of the AAT has the power to:

  • Affirm the primary decision made by the Department (no change)
  • Set aside the decision and substitute a new decision
  • Remit the matter back to the Department for reconsideration (return)
  • Vary the primary decision

It depends on the type of the decision and the method you have received the decision. 

Generally speaking, you must lodge the review application within 21 days if you wish to appeal a decision.
